FocusLocus: ADHD management Gaming System for educational achievement and social inclusion

Attentional Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects a significant part of the population and causes considerable behavioural problems, learning limitations in the context of the formal education system, and increased chances for social exclusion. Current treatment approaches induce high costs to welfare systems and individuals, while the widespread usage of stimulant medication remains a subject of controversy due to undesirable side effects. FocusLocus proposes a highly disruptive and innovative game-based intervention, relying on agent-based game mechanics that incorporate learning schemes for mental and motor behavioural change and skill acquisition, adopting multisensory user interaction with biofeedback and featuring personalisation, adaptation, performance analytics and monitoring features, delivered in a dual User Experience mode. FocusLocus is expected to (i) alleviate ADHD-associated symptoms and constitute a competent digital alternative to conventional ADHD treatment methods, (ii) enhance the learning capacity and support the social inclusion of ADHD sufferers, (iii) reduce the economic burden of costs for ADHD treatment and Data Collection, (iv) lead to scalable marketable products addressed to both individual sufferers and ADHD treatment centres, and (v) contribute to the body of research in ADHD treatment.
